I was trimming one of the trees in our garden and came across two huge caterpillars, amazing looking things.
After taking some photos I looked up what type of caterpillars they could be. The final ID was a Puss Moth Caterpillar.
The Puss moth caterpillar has a green body with a black or brown ‘saddle’ on its back, which is bordered in white. The rear legs have developed into long whip-like appendages which it flails around when in danger. As an extra defence it can spray formic acid from its head. WOW quite a find 🙂
Sadly I didn’t get to see them become moths, but hopefully they managed to escape the birds in the garden.
